The immediate reaction of German POWs upon watching uncensored footage of the concentration camps shot by the US Signal Corps.

People often forget that most of the German troops had no idea about what was going on, they weren’t all fanatic Nazis bent on genocide, they were just regular soldiers who answered the call when their country went to war.

NO NO NO NO
FUCK THIS SHIT
THE GERMAN CITIZENS KNEW
THEY KNEW
The ghettos happened in cities, the apartheid laws happened under their noses, Jews were rounded up under their noses THEY FUCKING KNEW
Death camps and concentration camps were built WITHIN CITY LIMITS. Auschwitz, for example, is well within the city, and people take fucking strolls under its walls. I was fucking THERE, don’t even. The Polish knew, the Germans knew, it was LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE not to know. It’s even in the historical record, it’s even in fucking civilian diaries, THEY KNEW.
I AM SO FUCKING SICK OF THIS REVISIONIST BULLSHIT.

^This.
Sorry not sorry, German apologists, but what you’re seeing in this photo isn’t shock, it’s guilt. Richly deserved, completely merited GUILT. So take your, “Aw, those innocent little German soldiers, poor babies,” revisionist shit and shove it back up your collective ass.

They knew, but can people also not say things like every one of those soldiers/citizens deserved that guilt, please? You tell me what you would do, when you have several kids and a wife at home, and the most powerful man in Germany with the force of an army says you need to fight or you and your family will suffer the same fate as those we are putting in the ghettos. You also can’t say which of those citizens and soldiers spent their lives helping Jews escape. Many people tend to overlook the fact also, that Hitler didn’t suddenly say “Hey, let’s kill Jews” and everyone said yeah ok and grabbed a gun. He was a fantastic motivational speaker, and wormed his way into the public’s mind gradually. It started with putting the mentally disabled (a big issue at the time period already; example of picking something the public was already uncomfortable about) into facilities, and progressed from there. He also revolutionized Germany’s economy, which was in a horrible state. He turned that around. So, in some cases, people were already on board with the Nazi party (which is a word which holds much more weight today. When Nazis first emerged, they were only a political party. The same as Democrat or Republican) because of Hitler’s plans for the country to move forward, and then when they wanted to back out once genocide and oppression began, they couldn’t anymore because it meant death for the individual, their family, and often times even friends. In situations like these, morals lose a lot of ground. Life boils down to surviving.

If you absolutely must goysplain the Holocaust, at least get your fucking facts straight.
You know the people for whom life boiled down to surviving during the Nazi reign? Jews. Rroma. LGBT people. People with disabilities. You know the people for whom life pretty much went on? The fuckers in this photo and their fucking families.
The Nazis were open about their antisemitism from the very beginning of the party—it wasn’t a side-effect, it was a selling point. Hitler didn’t create European antisemitism, he capitalized and expanded on the antisemitism that was already deeply rooted there. There was no fucking bait-and-switch.
As for your claim that the soldiers couldn’t back out or their families would be executed, go read Christopher R. Browning’s Ordinary Men, then see if you can still make that claim with a straight face. During the entirety of Nazi Rule, there was not one single instance of retaliation against a soldier’s family for refusing to kill Jews. Not a single one. In fact, units went out of their way to make sure soldiers with moral objections to slaughtering Jews were given other duties…but within a few rounds of mass murder, every one of the initial objectors dropped their objections and joined in.
This wasn’t a case of men who had no chance to back out, it’s a case of men deliberately and knowingly opting in. The only shred of historical evidence supporting the claim that the soldiers’ families were hostages for their participation in mass murder is those soldiers’ claims after the war, which they made to keep their sorry murderous asses from being tried for war crimes. But because they were such fine, upstanding, civilized white men, people like you continue to accept their self-serving and factually false legal defenses at face value.
The men in this photo weren’t Hitler’s victims, they were Hitler’s executioners. You have some real fucking chutzpah telling Jews that we should feel badly for them.

See the thing is, though, Daisy could’ve just been like, “Oh yeah I know him! From years ago — haven’t talked to him in ages.” And everything would’ve been cool, calm, and collected.

Or if not that, someone could’ve at least said to Nick, “Oh he’s this millionaire that lives across the bay — very eccentric. Looks like Leonardo DiCaprio.”

Nick: “Oh.”

There.

Problems. Solved.
